As the warm days of summer continue to shine, our students have been diving into the essentials of maintaining healthy habits during this vibrant season. Over the past week, we’ve explored a variety of engaging and educational activities aimed at ensuring the students have a fun, safe, and healthy summer.
Our journey began with the older cohort brainstorming their favorite summer activities and discussing how they stay healthy while enjoying them. From swimming to hiking, each student shared their unique ways of staying active and safe. This collaborative brainstorming session set the stage for a comprehensive lesson on healthy summer habits.
We delved into the importance of wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious foods. Armed with this knowledge, the students created “sun safety posters” that advertised essential tips to stay protected from the sun’s rays. Their creativity shone through in these vibrant and informative posters, which they proudly shared with their peers.
With some extra time, the students also designed outfits for a person dressed for summer, incorporating sun-safe accessories like hats and sunglasses. This activity not only reinforced the importance of sun protection but also allowed for a fun and creative expression.
Midweek, we shifted our focus to pool and beach safety. Both groups kicked off the day with a pool and beach-themed word search, which was a fun and interactive way to get their minds engaged.
Following the word search, we explored the question, “What pool rules do you already know? How about rules for the beach?” The students shared an impressive array of safety rules they were already familiar with. Building on their knowledge, we discussed additional pool and beach rules, emphasizing the importance of beach flag signs and their meanings.
A particularly intriguing topic was riptides, which was new to all our students. Their curiosity was piqued as they learned about the dangers of rip currents and how to stay safe. To solidify their understanding, the students got into groups and created mini plays and performances on topics such as “your friend gets stuck in a rip current.” These skits were not only educational but also provided a platform for students to demonstrate their comprehension of the material in a creative and engaging way.
This week’s activities have been a wonderful blend of education, creativity, and fun. Our AYTEF students are now better equipped with the knowledge and skills to enjoy a healthy and safe summer!
