Starting the Year Strong: Goal Setting and Planning at AYTEF

January at AYTEF was all about setting goals, fostering a positive mindset, and planning for success in 2025! With a fresh start to the new year, our students engaged in meaningful discussions and activities designed to help them set intentions, reflect on their attitudes, and visualize their aspirations.

Goal Setting and Gratitude for Donors

We kicked off the year by discussing the importance of donors and how they make our program possible. Students learned that donors provide the resources that allow us to have tennis practices, learning sessions, and all the opportunities we enjoy at AYTEF. After reflecting on what they were most thankful for—many expressing gratitude for their friends, coaches, and the chance to learn—the students wrote heartfelt thank-you cards to our donors. In addition to showing appreciation, they set personal goals for 2025, choosing one tennis-related goal and one academic goal to work toward throughout the year.

Optimism vs. Pessimism: A New Perspective

Mid-month, we explored the concept of optimism and pessimism, using the classic "glass half full vs. glass half empty" analogy. Students brainstormed examples of each mindset and challenged themselves to shift their thinking from a negative perspective to a positive one. To deepen their understanding, we watched videos highlighting the power of optimism and the impact our mindset can have on our daily lives. Through open discussion, students reflected on whether they typically see situations with a “glass half full” or “glass half empty” perspective and shared ways they could work toward a more optimistic outlook.

Bringing Goals to Life with Vision Boards

To wrap up the month, students took their goal-setting to the next level by creating their own vision boards. They learned how having a visual representation of their goals can serve as motivation and inspiration. With magazines, stickers, and creative materials at hand, they designed boards that reflected their aspirations, dreams, and values for 2025. This hands-on activity helped them turn their abstract goals into tangible, visual reminders of what they’re striving for this year.

January was a powerful month of reflection, gratitude, and planning, setting a strong foundation for the rest of the year. We’re excited to see our students work toward their goals and continue developing positive mindsets as they grow both on and off the court!
